ABBA TAKES OVER LONDON’S SOUTHBANK CENTRE
A new exhibition dedicated to Swedish pop foursome ABBA is coming to London this summer, as part of the Southbank Centre’s Nordic Matters season. The display, entitled ABBA: Super Troupers, will showcase a collection of previously unseen items, from photographs and films to personal notes, as well as musical instruments, album artwork, and show memorabilia.
Comprising pieces from personal archives and from the famous ABBA Museum in Stockholm, the exhibition examines the Scandinavian group’s influence on 1970s Britain, amidst an era of social change that saw London hit by a financial crisis, a series of strikes, and a three-day working week. With their spangled outfits, chirpy lyrics and catchy tunes, the band came as a breath of fresh air against a backdrop of such bleak economic prospects.
After forming in Stockholm in 1972, ABBA rose to international fame as winners of the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest – and became a fast pop culture favourite. The group boasts an enduring legacy, and has gone on to lend its name and sound to a number of other projects, including a jukebox musical performed on Broadway and London’s West End, Mamma Mia!, as well as a blockbuster film of the same name.
The exhibition will be held in the Royal Festival Hall on Level 1 of the centre, and tickets include a 60 minute guided tour of the nine immersive rooms (a maximum of 16 spaces are available in each time slot). Narrated by Jarvis Cocker, the tour will allow you to delve deep into the band’s history, revealing the stories behind their most memorable hits and providing an insight into the lives of the group’s four extraordinary members.
Head over to London’s Southbank Centre between April 3 and April 29 to discover the new exhibition: tickets are priced between £15 and £25, and are available to buy on the Southbank Centre’s website.
