THE MET CASTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON PARISIAN PARKS

This summer, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art will celebrate the beautiful parks and gardens of France, in an exhibition entitled Public Parks, Private Gardens: Paris to Provence. Showcasing famous works including Monet’s Parc Monceau paintings and Renoir’s Versailles, the display will allow guests a compelling insight into the 19th-century tendency towards depicting green spaces in art.

The 1800s were a time of change for France, as the capital underwent a transformation following the industrial years of the 1789 Revolution and World War I. Paris was divided into wide, tree-lined boulevards, whilst formerly royal properties were made open to the public. Coupled with a growing availability of exotic plants imported from abroad, the French public began to cultivate a newfound interest in horticulture: a fascination that was quickly swept up by the art world.

Artists began using their work to celebrate the outdoors as a place of leisure and inspiration, in an era that saw Naturalism, Impressionism and Art Nouveau rise to prominence. Both public and private gardens became the subject of numerous artistic works, in the form of paintings, drawings, photographs, and objects. From Camille Carot to Henri Matisse, the enduring works of the 19th Century all place plants, flowers and parks centre stage.

The Met itself is set against New York’s famous Central Park, a project originally inspired by European spaces such as the Bois de Boulogne. The museum’s new exhibition will comprise more than 150 works by 70 different artists, with works divided into five separate gallery spaces.
