The provencal town of Grasse is known all over as the world’s perfume capital – even the flowers used for Chanel’s quintessential No. 5 perfume find their roots there. The Fragonard factory, named after 18th-century painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, allows guests an exclusive glimpse into this delicate art.
The Fragonard historic factory is situated in the heart of Grasse’s picturesque old town, nestled amongst an eclectic mix of charming local shops. Open every day of the year, the 19th-century building houses one of the oldest perfumeries in Grasse. Free guided visits of the factory’s workshops and laboratories are offered to visitors in every European language, whilst the museum shop displays a range of exquisite Fragonard fragrances available to buy at factory price.
Venture to the building’s upper floor to discover the story behind the historic space, with Fragonard’s fascinating museum of perfume. A collection of flasks, gift sets, raw materials and alembic stills paint a picture of how the art has evolved, starting from its origins in High Antiquity all the way up to the present day.
The Fragonard factory itself was founded in 1926 by perfumer Eugène Fuchs, who established the business in one of Grasse’s oldest factories, built by Claude Mottet in 1841. The company’s first Parisian boutique appeared in 1936, opening its doors at 9 rue Scribe in the heart of the lively 9th arrondissement. With famous scents including Billet Doux and Moment Volé to its name, the perfumery is now run by Fuchs’s great-granddaughters Françoise and Agnès Costa.
The Fragonard factory is located at 20 boulevard Fragonard in Grasse, and is open everyday from 9am to 6pm.
