PIECES FROM THE RITZ PARIS TO GO UP FOR AUCTION
From April 17 to 21, 2018, the Ritz Paris is putting on an auction of more than 10,000 pieces, which previously adorned the hotel before its renovation from 2012 to 2016. The auction will bring together a collection of the Parisian hotel’s most iconic pieces, from a barber’s chair taken from the original beauty salon, to the Ritz’s first bathtub, to stunning Louis XV-style chandeliers.
With its excellent service and luxury atmosphere, the Ritz is one of Paris’s most illustrious venues. Yet the hotel also finds it charm in its history, having, for example, served as the film set for Love in the Afternoon, a film directed by Billy Wilder that stars Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper. Marcel Proust drew inspiration from the hotel’s staff for one of his characters in A la recherche du temps perdu, whilst the hotel bar was often frequented by American writers Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald during the 1920s. A photo of Coco Chanel at the hotel, along with a pair of sofas that formerly inhabited Marcel Proust’s living room, are just some of the items up for sale at the auction.
The hotel was careful to keep all of its previous furnishings when the space underwent its most recent renovation, however certain pieces did not correspond to the hotel’s new style – and from there came the idea to put the items up for sale. The auction will take place in the rooms of the Hôtel Marcel Dassault, off the Champs Elysées roundabout, following an exhibition that will cast the spotlight on a famous Parisian decorator.
