SEE KLIMT’S PAINTINGS BROUGHT TO LIFE AT THE NEW ATELIER DES LUMIERES
The city of Paris has long been known as a world centre for classical art, famous for its wealth of traditional establishments such as the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay. Yet now, thanks to Culturespaces chief executive Bruno Monnier, a new kind of gallery is stealing the spotlight: namely, his Atelier des Lumières, an immersive digital art centre that sets famous paintings to music, enlarging and projecting them across the venue’s vast walls.
The gallery’s inaugural exhibition, which opened on April 13, honours Viennese painter Gustav Klimt, in the centenary year of the artist’s death. Klimt himself is remembered as a revolutionary figure in the art world, facilitating the rise of modernism in Imperial Vienna towards the end of the 19th Century. The new exhibition will celebrate his artistic revolution by transporting visitors inside a heady world conceived from the painter’s elaborate golden designs. Accompanied by music from Luco Longobardi and curated by Gianfranco Iannuzzi, Renato Gatto and Massimiliano Siccardi, the immersive swirling interiors will showcase Klimt’s portraits and landscapes like never before.
Although the Atelier des Lumières opened less than a week ago today, the venue itself bears a lengthy (and fascinating) history. Built in 1835, the building originally housed the Fonderie du Chemin-Vert, a foundry set up by Plichon brothers Jacques François Alexandre and Hilaire Pierre to serve the increasing needs of the naval and rail industries at the dawn of the industrial revolution.
After closing in 1929, following the Wall Street crash and ensuing global financial crisis, the foundry then served as a base for the Martin family’s business, which specialized in the production and sale of machine tools. It was not until 2013, 13 years after the company had moved on, that Bruno Monnier stumbled upon the space, and began to create his vision for the mesmerising Atelier des Lumières.
