GIANT BALL PIT OPENS ON TOP OF MONTPARNASSE TOWER
Grab your inflatables and leave the office behind – a giant ball pit has been installed on top of Paris’s famous Tour Montparnasse! From April 13 to May 1, kids and big kids alike can head to the tower’s panoramic observation deck on the 56th floor, for an afternoon of childlike fancies against the backdrop of the breathtaking Parisian skyline.
Following suit from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, who last year saw its grand nave transformed into “The Beach” in celebration of concept store colette’s 15th anniversary, the well-known landmark has welcomed some 100,000 balls into a colossal 40m2 pit on its rooftop. Having previously housed activities such as a skating track, trampolines and ice skating rink, the tower has made a name for itself as a home of quirky alternative attractions to contest Paris’s droves of classical art galleries and typical Haussmann architecture.
The Tour Montparnasse was originally constructed as an office skyscraper, and held the title of the tallest skyscraper in France up until 2011. Designed by Eugène Beaudouin, Urbain Cassan and Louis Hoym de Marien, the tower also houses a magnificent restaurant on the other side of its 56th floor, christened the Ciel de Paris. The floor to ceiling windows offer guests an unparalleled view over the Eiffel Tower by night, with designer Noé Duchafour-Lawrence stating his vision for the space to be “a live performance, of which the City of Light is the star.”
Whether you’re after the carefree joys of the outdoor ball pit or the elegant setting of the tower’s restaurant, the Tour Montparnasse is well worth a visit for its stunning city views. You’d better hurry, though – the playful installation will only be hanging around for a few days longer. Entrance to the ball pit is free; visitors need only pay the standard admission fee of the observation deck (€17 for adults, €9.50 for children).
