PARIS UNVEILS PLANS FOR HUGE URBAN FARM
With its beautiful stone buildings, wide, busy boulevards and art galleries brimming with culture, the city of Paris is not exactly synonymous with a thriving agricultural centre. And yet this year, Parisculteurs, an initiative that aims to transform the French capital into a greener city, has revealed plans for a huge fruit and vegetable garden, installed right in the heart of the ultra-urban Porte de la Chapelle.
The new project will span a vast 7,000m2 surface area, and will be situated on the roof terrace of a huge 40,000m2 covered market that has just finished being constructed. Whilst the first load of goods is set to arrive in the market in autumn this year, the city of Paris has launched an appeal for projects to fill the farm above. A 2,800m2 area is now open for applications from landscapers, start-ups and urban agriculture specialists with a vision for the future of the space.
This section will join a 2,000m2 leisure area, featuring a coffee shop and boutique which will both favour French-grown, local ingredients, as well as the wider Chapelle International project, an entire mini-village complete with houses, offices and a school, which will surround the agricultural hub.
With the first construction efforts for the farm set to begin in the second quarter of 2018, organisers hope that the project will encourage Parisians to begin eating more fresh and local produce, and in turn become more aware of the environmental impact of their food habits. The vegetable gardens will be planted up in spring of next year, and the produce harvested from them will be sold in Franprix stores across Paris.
The new project marks a move in the right direction towards a more ecological urban lifestyle, and is an exciting step in the efforts to increase the number of green spaces freely available to the Parisian public.
