DISCOVER THE ART OF BANKSY WITH POP MY WORLD
With his stenciled designs encouraging cynicism and anarchy, the anonymous figure of “Banksy” has become the most notorious anti-conformist icon in the British art scene. Usually found scattered across urban landscapes around the United Kingdom, a Berlin shopping centre is now exhibiting the largest collection of Banksy artworks ever to be put on public display.
The Bristol underground scene is thought to be the home of enigmatic graffiti artist Banksy, who has become a household name thanks to his satirical works, which provide a startlingly revealing social commentary on the modern world. His pieces draw on a broad liberal philosophy that includes anti-war, anti-consumerist and anti-imperialist attitudes, and provide a criticism of human tendencies such as greed and hypocrisy through darkly amusing illustrations.
His most notable projects include a graffiti piece at London Zoo, where he protested the conditions of the animals through messages of despair seemingly written from their point of view, and a project in New York’s Met, where he placed subverted pieces of art amongst the museum’s permanent exhibits. It is the illegal nature of Banksy’s work, which often involves the defacing of public property, that is thought to be the reason behind the artist’s anonymity.
The Berlin exhibition, entitled “The Art of Banksy”, is being held in shopping centre Bikini Berlin, in the western area of the German capital’s city centre. Curated by the artist’s former manager, Steve Lazarides, the display will showcase more than 40 motifs taken from private collections all over the world, with a total value of more than 20 million pounds. Tickets are priced at €14, and the exhibition is running from 16 February 2018 to 15 January 2019 – don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to see some of the world’s best street art up close.
